Florida sheriff's deputy killed, another wounded in shooting while serving eviction notice: officials

Deputy Terri Mashkow, 47, died in the shooting, authorities said.

One sheriff’s deputy was killed and another wounded Friday after a suspect opened fire as officials attempted to serve an eviction notice in Indian River County, Florida, according to the local sheriff.

“What a horrible day, six days before Thanksgiving,” Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers said during a news conference Friday.

The two officers, as well as a locksmith, were shot while serving an eviction order to Michael Halberstam.

Halberstam, who has prior narcotics and misdemeanor assault charges, opened fire when sheriff’s deputies entered the home. Halberstam was also wounded in the shooting and remains in critical condition in the hospital, authorities said.

Deputy Terri Mashkow, 47, died in the shooting, authorities confirmed.

Florida Governor DeSantis also confirmed the shooting on Friday.

“There’s a lot going on. I just know that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is committed, working with the sheriff and the local community. We hope to get the best results,” DeSantis said during a conference. unrelated press conference on Friday.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier also confirmed the shooting during a unrelated press conference on Friday. Uthmeier did not provide further details about the incident, but observed a moment of silence.
