3 officers injured after an armed man opens fire in 'ambush situation' in Ohio: police

An armed man opened fire against two police officers from Ohio as they had lunch in their patrol vehicles on Wednesday, injuring them both, the authorities said.

A third officer who responded to the scene was also injured in the shooting, which the police described as an “ambush situation.”

The suspect had parked in a dead end of an industrial park not developed in Lorain, located in the Northeast of Ohio, and had a “arsenal of weapons with him,” said Lorain’s interim chief of Interim Police, Michael Failing, in an informative press session on Wednesday.

“He was lying down and opened fire with multiple rounds in the two officers who were sitting in their vehicles,” Failing said.

The shooting was developed around 1 PM, after the two officers with the Lorain Police Department had collected pizza for lunch and were parked one next to the other in the dead end, Failing said. The suspect had parked in the dead end, he said.

One of the officers suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transferred by plane to a hospital where he is receiving treatment, Failing said. The other officer was shot in his hand and is being treated in a hospital, he said.

Lorain’s third officer, who responded to a call for additional officers, received several shots in his patrol vehicle, Failing said. He was also transferred by plane to a hospital to receive medical treatment, he said.

The officers returned the fire against the suspect, who was armed with a “high -power rifle,” according to Elyria police officer James Welsh, who spoke in a separate informative session.

The suspect, described as a 28 -year -old man, was shot in the scene and declared himself dead, Failing said.

Police have not published the suspect’s name.

Welsh said that no other suspects have been located and that they are “quite safe” that there was only one shooter. The area has been contained, he said.

The Elyria Police Department is investigating the incident.

A reason is not known at this time, Welsh said.

“This is a difficult day for the Lorain Police Department and the community of application of the law,” Welsh said.

“It will take time to determine exactly what happened here today,” he said.

Ohio’s governor Mike Dewine said they have been informed about the shooting, saying that “it seems to have been an objective attack against the application of the law.”

“This situation reminds us that those who work in the police risk their lives every day for the safety of their communities,” he said in a statement In social networks. “We are very grateful for the men and women who serve and protect voluntarily and bravely.”

Ohio Jon Husted Senator said his office has offered help to local officials.

“There is no place for this type of violence in our state or country,” he said in a statement In social networks.
